Reading comprehension, grades 2–5.

Every child's profile holds their grade and reading level, so reading lessons are pitched at where each child really is. A lesson reads with them, shows the story or topic in pictures, and stops after each part to ask a question, so you find out what they understood, not just what they read.

What it covers

What children usually work on, grade by grade

2nd grade

  • Retelling a story in order: beginning, middle and end
  • Answering who, what, where, when, why and how
  • Finding the main topic of a short text
  • Describing how characters respond to what happens

3rd grade

  • Finding the main idea and the details that support it
  • Describing characters: their traits, feelings and reasons
  • Cause and effect, and the order of events
  • Working out a new word from the sentence around it

4th grade

  • Summarizing a text in a few sentences
  • Finding the theme of a story
  • Making inferences and pointing to the words that support them
  • Comparing two texts on the same topic

5th grade

  • Quoting the text accurately to explain an answer
  • Comparing characters, settings or events
  • How a narrator's point of view shapes a story
  • Figurative language: similes, metaphors and what they mean

A general guide to the skills that grow through these grades. A child's lessons follow their own reading level, which may be above or below their grade.

How the course works

Learned, not just watched

Pitched at each child

Each child's profile holds their grade, reading level and pace, so two children at the same table can get the same topic at different levels.

Shown as well as read

A voice reads along, and the picture draws itself as the text names each part, which helps children who find a page of words hard going.

A question after each part

The lesson stops to ask what just happened or what it means. A wrong answer gets an explanation, and it's asked a new way.

You see what they understood

The parent or teacher view shows each child's check-in accuracy, so you can tell reading from understanding.

Questions

Asked often

What reading level does it start at?

The one in the child's profile, which you set. If a child is reading above or below their grade, their lessons follow their reading level, not their grade.

Do you have worksheets?

Tessorio teaches with lessons on screen, with questions inside them. The questions do the job a worksheet does, and you see the answers in the parent view.

Can my child use it on their own?

Yes. Children pick their name on a shared device, with no email or password, and a parent PIN keeps your view separate.

Can a teacher use it with a class?

Yes. On the Teacher plan, a reading course is built once for the class, pitched at the class's reading range, with supports for English learners.

What does it cost?

The free courses in the Tessorio Library need no account and cost nothing. Plans are Self-learning $19.99 a month, Family $29.99, Teacher $19.99 and Course Creator $79. Paying yearly costs ten times the monthly price, so two months are free. Each plan includes the whole Library and a set number of new lesson minutes a month; watching and rewatching never use them.
